How do you get rid of the guilt?
George wrote me.
A lot has happened in the last few years in his financial life.
He's lost his business, the family's main car and the family's house.
His 2 sons, 1 daughter and wife are living in a small apartment.
They used to live in a big sprawling house.
Now he feels ashamed and guilty.
He feels he's lost the respect of his wife and kids forever.
He wrote me and asked me "How do I get rid of the guilt?"
Here's what I wrote:
Dear George:
You can't.
Not on your own.
And your wife and kids can't take it away from you either.
Even if they "forgave you" it wouldn't be enough.
You'll have to go to a bigger - the true - source of forgiveness and guilt reduction.
You'll have to go to God and get help.
Ask for your burden to be lifted and for direct help.
That's the only way.
There are some things in life that we can do on our own and can be great at them.
This is not one of those.
How you do that is up to you.
God will heal you and help you in ways you never can do it yourself.
You don't have to do penance.
It's not about your being punished.
It's about your starting your life back up again.
If I had a simpler or more "behavioral" way that worked I'd tell you.
But I'm telling you the thing that will help you and make a difference for you... the ONLY thing.
